Mount Chōkai is the second-highest peak in the Tohoku region, spanning both Akita and Yamagata Prefectures. It is also known as "Dewa Fuji." It is famous for the spectacular sight of the Kage Chōkai (Shadow Chōkai), where its shadow is cast upon the Sea of Japan, and for its rich variety of alpine plants. Besides mountain climbing, it is also known as a mecca for spring skiing and a popular trekking course.
